    • Stefan Füle at the Centre: "Integration of the Czech Republic to NATO: Lessons Learned"

    •
    • Date: 27 September 2007

Stefan Füle, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to NATO, visited the Belgrade School of Security Studies, on September 27, 2007, and presented the lecture on the “Integration of the Czech Republic to NATO: Lessons Learned”. Ambassador Füle's visit and lecture was organised by the Atlantic Council of Serbia.

Based on Czech Republic’s experience with the accession to NATO and their first experience with the membership he grouped the lessons learned in the following areas: political, institutional, legislative, defensive, resources (both economic and human), security information, and public support.

In this presentation general political consensus on the effort to join NATO was presented as the basic criterion and prerequisite, as it has not only the effect on the implementation of the Article 5 Washington Treaty but also on the support on the future operations as it intertwined with the public support.

The need for temporary effective institutional framework was emphasised in the integration process due to the fact that the areas of civil service will be affected by it.

Apart from pointing out that the burden on the economic and human resources is not so astronomical, as in the first 10 years Czech Republic has received more in infrastructure budget then they gave, Ambassador Füle has underlined the importance of adoption of sufficient security standards for accepting, handling, storing and using of security information because this could become a critical shortfall for the membership.
