    • Call for three Research Fellows from the Western Balkans

      The Centre for Civil-Military Relations (CCMR), a civil society organisation from Belgrade, announces call for 3 Research Fellows from Western Balkan countries for autumn 2008. The Research Fellows will be provided with an opportunity to spend two months in Belgrade (15 October - 15 December 2008) doing research on Western Balkan and European security and to take part in two international conferences that will be organised by the Centre in that period. The costs of fellowship (travel, accommodation, per diems) are fully covered from the donation by the Royal Norwegian Government.

      The Centre for Civil-Military Relations is the oldest think tank in the Western Balkans focusing on security related research, advocacy and education. The CCMR was established in 1997 with a mission to promote responsible participation of civil society in increasing the safety of citizens and provision of national security based on democratic principles, as well as security cooperation with neighboring countries and Serbia's security integration into the Euro-Atlantic community. The Centre currently employs ten research fellows in its research-unit Belgrade School of Security Studies and three staff members. The Belgrade School of Security Studies (BSSS) is a special division of the CCMR set up to carry out systematic research and promote academic advancement of young researchers thus contributing to the development of civilian expertise for security studies in the region.  You can find more about the Centre and its activities and publications at: www.ccmr-bg.org.

      Opportunities for Research Fellows:

      The CCMR/BSSS Research Fellows will benefit personally and professionally by:

      • Participating in work of dynamic think-tank on promotion of democratic security governance in Serbia, Western Balkans and Europe;
      • Receiving professional support for independent research and formal academic improvement through mentorship; 
      • Acquiring experience with research methodology related to policy relevant research;
      • Attending lectures, conferences and media events organised by CCMR or its partner organisations;
      • Networking with civil society, policy-makers, academics and foreign diplomats active in Belgrade;
      • Using CCMR facilities (office, specialised library with over 1000 titles, network of expert associates, etc.);
      • Getting opportunity to publish their research and present it to regional security community.


      • Citizen of one of Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo under UNPC 1244);
      • MA or PhD candidates and holders in the field of security studies, political science, international relations, law, sociology, psychology, communications etc.;
      • Strong interest in security studies, international relations and the region;
      • Basic research skills and readiness to carry out policy-oriented research;
      • Excellent knowledge of English language and computer literacy;
      • Eligibility to reside in Belgrade for the whole duration of fellowship.

      NOTE: The candidates from countries outside of Western Balkans are encouraged to apply for non-paid fellowships for winter cycle (10 January - 30 March) until 10 December 2008, spring cycle (10 April - 30 June) until 10 March 2009, summer cycle (10 July - 30 September) until 10 August 2009 and for autumn cycle (10 October - 25 December) until 10 September 2009. This program includes two different internship opportunities, residential internship and non-residential internship.

      Key Responsibilities:

      Selected applicants will have to fulfill the following tasks during their fellowship in the CCMR:

      • Doing background research on security sector reform, regional security and the EU policies towards the Western Balkans under the guidance of CCMR experts;
      • Write one paper for quarterly journal Western Balkans Security Observer(http://www.bsss.ccmr-bg.org/cms/view.php?id=102). WBSO is also available through specialised databases: International Security and Relations Network (www.isn.ethz.ch) and Central and Eastern European Online Library (CEEOL);
      • Contacting relevant partner organisations from the region and the world;
      • Assisting CCMR team in organization of two international conferences and their regular work.

          i.    reasons why do you apply for this position;

          ii.   why do you think we should select you;

          iii.  research topic of your interest;

      c.     One academic or professional reference;

      d.  Writing Sample in English or Serbo-Croatian (extract from academic  essay, dissertation or any other original publication)
