In Belgrade’s Media Centre presentation of the Collection of Papers “Business and Security” was organized by Centre for Civil-Military Relations. After the presentation a discussion ensued on the most interesting issues.

Miroslav Hadžić (CCMR) opened the panel explaining that this collection of papers presents the result of series of interviews made with particular aim to realize how does economic, or better to say entrepreneurial elite perceive the security sector. Main findings of the panellists are that elites don’t have any motive or whatsoever for genuine security sector reform to happen. Boris Begović (Law Faculty, Belgrade University), Jadranka Jelinčić (Open society Fund, Belgrade) and Dragiša Jovanović (Board of Association for Private Security within Serbian Chamber of Commerce) took the floor afterwards, emphasizing the need for economic approach in security sector, the need for scientific analysis of key security issues in Serbia, as well as the need for proper defining of future reforms in this area.

During the public discussion the audience asked whether military neutrality is the best option for Serbia, and if not, why it is the case, and what are the costs and benefits of possible Serbian NATO accession. During the discussion the conclusion was made that it is necessary to overcome the present, emotional level of political and security discourse of Serbia and that these questions need proper answers within the course of democratic and analytical process.
