    • BCSP supports petition to increase number of seats for less represented sex

    •
    • Date: 16 May 2011
Researchers of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) HAVE expressed their support for a petition authored by a network of female politicians. It proposes adoption of amendments to the Article 40a, paragraph 1 of the Draft Law on Amending the Law on Election of Members of Parliament

The amendment provides that at every third position on electoral lists must be filled by a person of less represented sex.

Text of the petition also requested that the National Assembly adopts the following proposal:

"When a deputy terminates the mandate before the expiry of his term, the mandate is to be awarded to the candidate of the same sex occupying the next place on the list."

This amendment ensures the equitable participation of both sexes in the Serbia's National Assembly, which is guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia and the Law on Gender Equality.
