          • Assessing the Performance of the Bundestag’s Inquiry Committee on NSU

          • BCSP Researcher Katarina Djokic analyzes the performance of the Bundestag’s Inquiry Committee on the terrorist group Nationalsozialistische Untergrund (NSU).

        • One of the biggest affairs in the recent German history is set to reach its (partial) conclusion. The German Bundestag Inquiry Committee on the terrorist group Nationalsozialistische Untergrund (NSU) submitted on August 22nd the final report on its findings; the report is expected to be discussed in the Bundestag in a special session on September 2nd.

NSU stands for a three-member far right cell which, unimpeded by any police or the security service Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV) action, in the course of several years allegedly committed a series of murders and at least two bomb attacks throughout Germany. Their actions only became known in November 2011 after two members, chased by police after an attempt to rob a bank, committed suicide, with the third member setting the flat which they dwelled on fire and being subsequently arrested. At no point did any police investigation seriously turn to the possibility of right extremism. At the same time, the very group was unsuccessfully sought by the police and the BfV for their previous involvement in extremist activities.
