    • The Mafia Unveiled, a book by Diego Scarabelli

    •
    • Date: 01 February 2016
A portrait of the mafia dating back to the first decades of the Twentieth Century resurfaces from the historical archives of the Italian Carabinieri thanks to Diego Scarabelli, a former BCSP guest researcher.

Diego Scarabelli, a guest researcher at the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy back in 2012, is the author of recently published book “The Mafia Unveiled”.

Written in the form of direct testimony this document offers a powerful and shocking image of the Mafia during Liberal and Fascist Italy in the provinces of Caltanissetta, Agrigento, Palermo, Trapani, Enna, Ragusa and Catania. The author is Paolo Bordonaro, Warrant Officer of the Royal Carabinieri. With his “investigation report” written in 1927 under Perfect Mori, Bordonaro effectively supports and integrates our knowledge of the Mafia as conveyed to us by other members of the law enforcement authorities. Murders and thefts of mares and mules, extortions and robberies, intimidation and omerta, tell the everyday story of a power that was unchallenged, widespread, violent and often stronger than the State. These pages arouse our curiosity for the past, while making us reflect on the present.

The book is available on Amazon
