    • Rule of law paramount for the success of European integration

    •
    • Date: 08 June 2017

State of the rule of law in Serbia and it’s impact on the business community were the main topics of the meeting between the Commissioner for EU Enlargement Johannes Hahn and the representatives of civil society and the business sector held on 8 June 2017 at the premises of the EU Delegation to Serbia.

The director of the Belgrade Center for Security Policy Sonja Stojanovic Gajic has emphasised during the meeting that the findings of public opinion polls show that citizens of Serbia have more positive than negative associations regarding the EU, primarily concerning democracy, human rights and economic benefits.

"There are still more citizens of Serbia who are for membership in the EU rather than against it, but their support for European integration depends on the consistency and success in the dialogue on the rule of law. Citizens believe that the EU accession will attract foreign investment and increase employment, and see the Union as the most successful in the field of democracy, rule of law and human rights", said Stojanovic Gajic.

Strengthening the rule of law is of paramount importance for the success of the European integration and for the improvement to the business and investment climate in the region, Hahn pointed out during this occasion.

"European perspective has no alternative and I'm glad to see Serbia's progress in the European integration process. The rule of law implies strong and independent institutions, law enforcement and modernization of public administration. The enlargement process must benefit the citizens before the actual accession to the EU“, said Hahn.

The meeting was attended by Ana Firtel from  the Foreign Investors Council, Violeta Jovanovic from the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED), Vera Nikolic Dimic from the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia, Natasa Dragojlovic of the National Convention on the European Union and Zoran Sekulic from the Media Association.

On the same day, Hahn has opened regional conference organized by the European Commission aimed at improving of the investment climate in the countries of the Western Balkans, and has met with the President of Serbia, ministers and businessmen during his visit.
