    • Context Analysis of Security Sector Reform in Western Balkans to be presented in Brussels

    •
    • Date: 18 May 2011
      18. may 2011. - Event announcement - May 26, 2011, CEPS Brussels, 15h30-18

As it was the case in Sarajevo in March, we are about to present the results of our research of the dominant social-political context which has shaped the course of the reforms in Western Balkans' societies since the fall of communism until today, this time in Brussels. It was in Sarajevo when we determined that there is a number of common features of this context, led by the overarching process of EU and NATO integration.

There are, however, significant differences between the societies which have inherited unreformed force structures, as Serbia has, and those that have built them from scratch. Therefore, some of the questions which will be raised this time, from a regional and more national perspective are:

      • What can be understood as the greatest success in security sector reform so far?
      • Which are the greatest challenges?
      • Who (which actors) are the „champions“ of reform and in which areas?
      • What are the „lessons learned“ in past two decades of reform?

Aside from BCSP's Sonja Stojanovic and Gorana Odanovic, results will be presented by our six partner organisations (Institute for International Relations Zagreb, Centre for Security Studies Sarajevo, Centre for Human Rights and Democracy CEDEM from Podgorica, Institute for Democracy and Mediation IDM Tirana, Analytica Skopje and Kosovo Centre for Security Studies Pristina).
