\tThe challenges to the establishment of the rule of law in local communities and the ways local activists use to overcome them is the topic of the debate that will take place on May 30, in <\/strong>Multimedia Center Kvart in Kraljevo, starting at 17h.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\tSerbia is currently in the sixth year since the accession talks with the EU had started. The accession negotiations place the rule of law at the forefront of this process, at least at a declaratory level. This is reflected in a comprehensive set of reforms that are planned in the areas of judiciary and fundamental rights (Chapter 23) and justice, liberty and security, (Chapter 24). However, despite the ambitious plans, it seems that the effects of these reforms are lacking: numerous global rankings notice the backsliding in Serbia in the fields of freedom of the press<\/a>, perception of corruption<\/a> or the rule of law<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\tHow is it possible that, at the same time, Serbia is opening negotiations on new chapters, when, at the same time, stagnation or backsliding are taking place? How does this state of play is seen from the Brussel\u2019s perspective and the newest Serbia Country Report (to be published on May, 29), how is it seen from the Belgrade-based civil society organisations and, finally, what does it mean for the activists and citizens of Kraljevo who stand for these values?<\/p>\n
