Among them were distinguished professors and researchers who presented their experiences and opinions, and gave advices and proposals on this topic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\tFor three days about 40 participants from 25 countries, including both NATO member states and NATO partner states, debated the issues of terrorism leadership and attempted to formulate policy oriented clues and proposals on how the global fight with this security threat ought to be continued.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe workshop was opened with short welcoming addresses of the co-directors,\u00a0PISM\u2019s analyst <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pism.pl\/Institute\/staff\/research-office\/kacper-rekawek\">Kacper Rekawek<\/a> and BCSP Researcher <a href=\"http:\/\/bezbednost.org\/List-of-all-people\/4080\/Marko-Milosevic.shtml\">Marko Milosevic<\/a>, followed by a presentation of a representative of the donor,\u00a0NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme (SPS), <strong>Michael Switkes<\/strong>, PhD, who outlined SPS\u2019s funding objectives and spoke about NATO\u2019s role in countering terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>\tAt the first plenary session of the workshop it was noted that\u00a0lessons of history should not be forgotten\u00a0while studying terrorism and that we are bound to remain concerned about the complexity of each and every terrorist case studied, as this will inform our future counter-terrorism policy.<\/p>\n<p>\tDiscussion evolved around\u00a0the pitfalls of terrorism research, and difficulties both academics and experts face while formulating policy oriented proposals. The first terrorism leadership case study was presented, and\u00a0the infamous Abu Mus\u2019ab al-Suri, one of the greatest strategists of jihadism, was\u00a0used as\u00a0the example.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe workshop<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>returned to the theme of terrorist leaders\u2019 ends and the future avenues of research in this very element of terrorism studies. Some of the participants gave the examples of their own countries &#8211; one participant\u00a0presented a peculiar case study of a terrorist leader commanding a friends and family based terrorist organisation.<\/p>\n<p>\tInteresting was the debate about the ins and outs of the so-called \u2018leaderless resistance\u2019 for terrorist groups, organisations and networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\tThe last day of the workshop was\u00a0presented another type of leader of a terrorist organisation &#8211; ideologue or a religious authority. For this was used the example of Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi.<\/p>\n<p>\tA run down on the importance of leaders in de-radicalisation and disengagement process of terrorist foot-soldiers and organisations was offered. The examples of terrorist groups from Algeria, Egypt and Libya were used for this.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe workshop was concluded with a wide-ranging summary on types of leaders emerging within the milieu of British jihadism.<\/p>\n<div class=\"anterfile\">\t<span>This workshop\u2019s theme falls into the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/SID-148A7BED-239A8619\/natolive\/topics_85373.htm\"> NATO\u2019s Science for Peace and Security Programme<\/a> key priority of facilitating mutually beneficial cooperation on issues of common interest, including international efforts to meet emerging security challenges such as counter-terrorism.<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The NATO advanced research workshop reinforced the links between universities and think-tank community, and created a platform for future cooperation of most prominent experts in the field of counter-terrorism policy.
