{"id":21129,"date":"2019-07-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bezbednost.org\/local-activists-fighting-for-rule-of-law-in-their-town-need-support\/"},"modified":"2020-07-21T20:47:22","modified_gmt":"2020-07-21T18:47:22","slug":"local-activists-fighting-for-rule-of-law-in-their-town-need-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bezbednost.org\/en\/local-activists-fighting-for-rule-of-law-in-their-town-need-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Activists Fighting for Rule of Law in Their Town Need Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t<strong>The challenges to the establishment of the rule of law in local communities and the ways local activists use to overcome them was the focus of the event Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) organized on 30 May 2019 in Kraljevo.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\tThe local perspective of activists in Kraljevo, the national perspective from Belgrade and the Brussels\u2019 viewpoint regarding progress of Serbia in chapters 23 and 24 of EU accession negotiations, in the light of the latest Country Report, were discussed by <strong>Dragana Veljovic from Fenomena<\/strong>, <strong>Predrag Vostinic \u00a0from Local Front<\/strong>, <strong>Tanja Ignjatovic from Autonomous Women\u2019s Centre<\/strong> and <strong>Zlata Djordjevic from Transparency Serbia<\/strong>. BCSP Researcher <a href=\"http:\/\/bezbednost.org\/Researchers\/5322\/Bojan-Elek.shtml\" title=\"Click here!\">Bojan Elek<\/a>\u00a0 moderated the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>\tActivists from Kraljevo highlighted issues they face in their community. Veljovic shared an example: Fenomena was denied permission to have an activity on the town square, with a technical excuse.<\/p>\n<div class=\"anterfile\">\t<strong>\u201cInstitutions are treating Fenomena as competition because we provide services to women in Kraljevo, which culminated in taking away the license to conduct trainings for the SOS hotline for women victims of violence,\u201d Veljovic said.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>\tThe erosion of women\u2019s rights on a national scale, through legal changes, was the main point for Tanja Ignjatovic. Predrag Vostinic and Zlata Djordjevic discussed effects of high-level corruption on the local and national level.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe audience was engaged throughout the event, taking special interest in the topic of corruption and the emergence of government-organized NGOs (GONGOs).<\/p>\n<p>\t<em>The local debate is part of a joint effort by <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/crta.rs\/en\/\"><strong><em>Centre for Research, Transparency and Accountability &#8211; CRTA<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>, <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nkd.rs\/\"><strong><em>National Coalition for Decentralization<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>, <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bezbednost.org\/BCSP\/2001\/Home.shtml\"><strong><em>Belgrade Centre for Security Policy<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>and <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.partners-serbia.org\/en\/\"><strong><em>Partners for Democratic Change Serbia<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>to encourage greater citizen participation in decision-making process through the project &#8220;Reconnecting Democracy &#8211; Citizens in Power&#8221; supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
