SUPPORTING ACTIVISTS<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Throughout 2021 BCSP continued to support activists accross Serbia. Due to the inaction of institutions and all other problems faced by all those who want to change our society for the better, we have established the Civil Committee for the protection of human rights defenders and whistleblowers<\/a>. Additionally, the BCSP team spoke with activists across Serbia to record success stories of activism<\/a>. Support and solidarity among activists are needed to break the fear and contribute to change in society.<\/p>\n

STATE CAPTURE<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The pandemic further exposed and accelerated the process of state capture in Serbia. BCSP analyzed the narratives<\/a> of public officials in charge of managing the pandemic. We published a report on the continuation of state capture<\/a>, in which we monitored and documented the role of security institutions and how they contributed to that negative trend. We presented the chronology of key events relevant to state capture on a new website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

SECURITY<\/strong><\/h4>\n

After the reactions of BCSP and other organizations, the controversial Draft Law on Internal Affairs<\/a> was withdrawn, and potentially harmful consequences for the rights of citizens and democracy in Serbia were prevented. In partnership with other organizations we reacted to improper police conduct during ecological protests, as well as to many actions of state institutions and its representatives<\/a> that lead to further erosion of the rule of law and democracy in Serbia.<\/p>\n

FOREIGN POLICY<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Foreign policy issues were in the focus of BCSP work during the previous year. BCSP team analyzed how the pandemic was used to form public opinion about international partners<\/a> and the positioning of China as Serbia’s greatest friend. The 11th Belgrade Security Forum<\/a> was held under the title \u201cTesting Humanity\u201d and initiated discussions on a number of current foreign policy and security issues.<\/p>\n

  • BCSP research findings and analysis appeared in the media over 1,400 times during 2021.<\/li>\n
  • BCSP team organized around 20 public events and trainings.<\/li>\n
