One of them pointed a gun at me and said: <em data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2412\">\u2018You know we can break into your apartment at night and put you on the floor with guns.\u2019<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2417\" data-end=\"2484\">Risti\u0107 later discovered his phone had been infected with spyware.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2723\">\n<p data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2723\">\u201cI still haven\u2019t processed that I\u2019m a victim. We have proof of purchases for institutions like EPS. one of the most pressing human rights challenges of our time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4577\" data-end=\"4755\">Nolan pointed out that governments often justify spyware use as counterterrorism, but in reality, these tools are \u201cused against citizens, journalists, and political opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4756\" data-end=\"4954\">\n<p data-start=\"4758\" data-end=\"4954\">\u201cEven in countries with strong rule of law, like Spain, we\u2019ve seen spyware used against Catalan political figures. The number of victims may be small, but the impact on free speech is enormous.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4956\" data-end=\"5032\">He emphasised that existing laws have failed to keep pace with technology:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5033\" data-end=\"5204\">\n<p data-start=\"5035\" data-end=\"5204\">\u201cIn Serbia, seizing someone\u2019s phone is treated as non-invasive, but once you access all the data, that is an extreme invasion of privacy. The law must recognise this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5206\" data-end=\"5347\">Nolan concluded that while national regulation is possible, meaningful international oversight remains blocked by a lack of political will.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5348\" data-end=\"5460\">\n<p data-start=\"5350\" data-end=\"5460\">\u201cGovernments invoke national security to justify everything.
