{"id":17053,"date":"2012-02-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-21T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bezbednost.org\/publikacija\/business-and-security\/"},"modified":"2023-08-07T16:13:54","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T14:13:54","slug":"business-and-security","status":"publish","type":"publikacija","link":"https:\/\/bezbednost.org\/en\/publication\/business-and-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Business and Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0connection\u00a0existing between economic development and security\u00a0was for most of the presenters\u2019 one of the starting points.\u00a0Several of the presentations asked the question of\u00a0costs and\u00a0benefits of\u00a0integration to NATO.\u00a0Presenters who participated\u00a0in the ensuing debate centered their attention on\u00a0putting the &#8220;price tag&#8221; on\u00a0Serbia&#8217;s military neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of Serbia&#8217;s academic and\u00a0government institutions, experts active in civil society and employed by international organizations present in Belgrade, and diplomatic representatives all took part in the conference&#8217;s proceedings.\u00a0Other than Serbia, presenters came from Croatia, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina,\u00a0as\u00a0well as Central and Eastern European\u00a0countries\u00a0(Slovenia, Hungary, and Slovak Republic). H.E. Ambassador of Finland to Serbia also contributed by speaking on the experiences of his country.<\/p>\n<p>As for the collection of essays, in its first part you can read the introductory papers, concerned with providing the right theoretical and methodological framework for understanding the relationship between\u00a0economy, security and development:\u00a0Svetlana Djurdevic-Lukic wrote on &#8220;Security and Development Nexus: New Concepts and Practices of International Organizations&#8221;, Boris Begovic followed by &#8220;Difficulties in Calculating the Costs of Security: a Theoretical Approach&#8221;\u00a0and Predrag Bjelic&#8217;s paper, &#8220;Security of Industrial Development in a Globalized World and Securing Raw Materials through International Trade&#8221;. Marko Milosevic and Predrag Petrovic,\u00a0researchers in the Centre\u00a0did a summary of their research on how Serbia&#8217;s business elites conceptualise security in transition.<\/p>\n<p>The second part of this collection of essays provides another important, yet slightly different perspective: here authors tried to explain how (eventual) NATO membership may affect their countries&#8217; economy.\u00a0Here you can read the work of Tanja Karaulac\u00a0(&#8220;Country risk, foreign direct investments and NATO&#8221;),\u00a0Luka Brkic (&#8220;Expenses of preparation for NATO integration &#8211; Croatian case&#8221;), Ivan Jovetic (&#8220;Advantages and Costs of NATO Integration &#8211;\u00a0Challenges for Montenegro&#8221;), Artan Karini (&#8220;The Economic and Social Costs of Albania\u2019s Accession into NATO&#8221;), Denis Hadzovic (&#8220;NATO Impact on the Local Economy &#8211; The Case of B&amp;H&#8221;)\u00a0and Marjan Djurovski (&#8220;How Much Does the Accession of the Republic of Macedonia to NATO Cost&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>The concept\u00a0of military neutrality and its validity in post-Cold War era\u00a0is covered in the third part of this collection.\u00a0Brigadier General Mitar Kovac, Head of Serbia MoD&#8217;s Strategic Planning Department, tried to explain the difference between political and military neutrality, while Ambassador of Finland Kari Veijalainen presented his country&#8217;s case to this debate.<\/p>\n<p>Second focus point, state of arms&#8217; industry is analyzed in the fourth part, where Stevan Nikcevic,\u00a0Director General of\u00a0Jugoimport SDPR (&#8220;Security integrations and Serbian Defence Industry &#8211; Chance for sustainable development&#8221;) i Janos Horvat (&#8220;Potential implications of NATO accession: The case of Hungary\u2019s Military-industrial complex&#8221;).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Collection of Essays &#8220;Business and Security&#8221; comprises papers submitted to the conference of the same name, organized by the Centre on November 6 and 7, 2008 in the National Assembly.
