Jelena Pejić Nikić

Senior Researcher

Jelena first joined the BCSP team as an intern in 2014, later progressing to the position of researcher.

Since September 2019, Jelena has been coordinating the work of the prEUgovor coalition, which combines the efforts of seven civil society organisations to monitor the fulfilment of political criteria and the implementation of reforms as agreed under Chapter 23 (Judiciary and Fundamental Rights) and Chapter 24 (Justice, Freedom and Security) of Serbia’s negotiations with the European Union. She is particularly interested in the relationship between human rights and national security, especially with regards to individual privacy and access to information that is in the public interest.

In the Spring of 2016, Jelena completed an internship as part of the team of a member of the German Bundestag. Back at the BCSP she has conducted research into the legislative and strategic framework of Serbia’s security system, the use of special measures for covert data gathering and Serbia’s European Integration.

Jelena is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade, where she also completed, with honours, her undergraduate and master’s studies in international humanitarian law and human rights law and European studies. She has also been teaching associate at the Department of European Studies of the same faculty since 2015.

Jelena speaks English and German fluently and is proficient in Spanish, French and Russian.
