Deepening knowledge and exchange of views on the role that NATO should have in Serbia and the Western Balkans marked the study visit by the research team of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) and journalists to the Allied Joint Force Command Naples – NATO (JFC Naples), which the BCSP organized on 30 January – 1 February 2019.

The visit enabled close cooperation between researchers with expertise in the field of defence and cooperation with NATO and journalists who have access to a wider audience and insight into topics that interest the citizens of Serbia.

“During the study visit, we had the opportunity to learn more about the evolution of NATO partnership policies and mechanisms for building interoperability with partner countries, especially on the Concept of operational capabilities and REGEX exercises. Practical military cooperation between Serbia and NATO is a topic on which there isn’t always accurate and verified data in the public, which opens up space for different prejudices and tendentious interpretations. Therefore, BCSP is trying to highlight various aspects of this cooperation in its research and assess how the defence system can benefit from it,” said BCSP researcher Katarina Djokic.

One of the goals of the visit was to strengthen cooperation between researchers and journalists. Representatives of BCSP, along with the editor of the program “Dozvolite”  Goran Janicevic and Blic journalist Marko Taskovic had the opportunity to discuss with the representatives of the JFC Naples about the cooperation between Serbia and NATO. In order for the citizens of Serbia to learn the most relevant information, BCSP researchers shared key information with journalists, while journalists pointed out topics that would attract public attention.

“The significance of the visit to the European Command of the JFC Naples is multiple. In pleasant communication, we learned about the interests of NATO officials, presented the interests of domestic media regarding the presence and role of NATO in the Balkans, and with BCSP researchers with whom we have long-lasting successful cooperation, we have found out very important information for the Serbian public.  So Blic first published many of the unknown details related to NATO investments in the demilitarization project of the Kragujevac Repair Institute.  It is interesting that this project has been going on for three years and will be over this year, and the wider public is only now in the position to find out about its significance, ” Blic journalist Marko Taskovic pointed out.

The study visit was organized within the project “Exploring the best possible cooperation: what role for NATO in Serbia and the region?“, which is supported by the British Embassy in Belgrade.  BCSP through this project aims to contribute to the enhancement of Serbia – NATO cooperation and to placing credible information on NATO's activities in the Western Balkans.

The network of associations of citizens, journalists and media standing up against violence, that supports the civil demands of the “Serbia against violence” protests, reminds the Minister of the Interior Bratislav Gašić and the Director of the Security Intelligence Agency (BIA) Aleksandar Vulin of the citizens’ demand to resign and thus open up space for the reform of the security system that, captured by party interests, currently fails to stand in the way of widespread violence.
