Working Group for the Political Criteria Within NCEU Established

Monitoring the state of democracy and freedom of expression and the media in Serbia will be in the focus of a new Cross-Sectoral Working Group of the National Convention on the European Union (NCEU) for political criteria, which was established on January 24, 2020 in Belgrade.

Director Igor Bandovic will represent BCSP in this NCEU working group.

„The state of democracy, media freedom and freedom of expression are the most important interests of Serbian citizens and when they are threatened, represent a threat to their security and the security of the entire democratic order of the country. Any reform process, including the European integration process, must keep these principles as guidelines in order to ultimately deliver results that benefit the entire society,” Bandovic highlighted.

The new NCEU cross-sectoral group will be dedicated to regularmonitoring of the state of reforms in the area of democracy development and informing citizens, as it is an issue of public importance, emphasizedthe coordinator of the working group Srdjan Majstorovic (CEP).

„The BCSP decision to join to the NCEU cross-sectoral group for political criteria is led by insisting on values that are at the heart of BCSP’s work: that without democracy, free elections, division of power and responsibilities of public office holders, culture of dialogue and civilian control of the security services no reform process can succeed, and that European integration must first and foremost follow these principles in order to achieve their purpose,“ explained Bandovic.

The BCSP team participates in the several NCEU working groups, and is coordinating the Working group for Chapter 24 – Justice, Freedom and Security.

The National Convention on the European Union (NCEU) is a permanent, institutionalized body within which a thematically structured debate takes place between representatives of the state administration, non-governmental organizations, politicians, experts, professional organizations and the general public on Serbia’s accession to the European Union. NCEU consists of 21 working groups that cover the themes of all 35 chapters of the EU acquis. BCSP is the Coordinator of the Working Group for Chapter 24.
