BCSP Director visited French Ministry of defense

BCSP Director Sonja Stojanovic Gajic took part in a visit to France program, organized by the French Ministry of Defense from October 6th to 10th 2014.

During the stay in Paris, BCSP Director met representatives from the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, General Secretariat for defense and national security by the Prime Minister’s office, and from the National Parliament.

Creation and coordination of national security policy, coordination of defense and foreign policy, and the practice of parliamentary and internal control over defense were among main topics of the discussions.

“The biggest impression was left by the Central control service in the Ministry of Defense and defense inspectorates in several sectors of the Ministry and General Staff that hold great resources, and influence over decisions and policies within French defense system. These services can control every matter and every employee within the Ministry of Defense, including private firms that produce equipment for the military. Their recommendations are taken into account not only when it comes to control, but in all matters of reform and reorganization.”

BCSP Director also took part in Jacques Rupnik’s lecture to Master students of European integration at Faculty of Political Science in Paris (Sciences Po). She was answering questions about EU policies towards Western Balkans, its security challenges, cooperation in the region, and the role of civil society in security sector reform.
