BCSP as part of a global call to action to improve the protection of whistleblowers at the UN level
The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy became one of 106 civil society organisations and activists who signed an open letter for the protection of whistleblowers on December 7th, which was addressed to all member states of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
The undersigned organisations represent a diverse range of voices from across the globe who have provided strong support for the whistleblower resolution at the 10th Conference of States Parties (CoSP10) to be held from December 11 to 15 in Atlanta, USA.
With this open letter, member states are warned that the position of whistleblowers is one of the burning issues, not only in the fight against corruption but also in improving the quality of the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
Whistleblowers’ challenges are numerous and complex, requiring a systemic response. In 2023, the position of whistleblowers and their protection represents one of the most important tests in the rule of law and the protection of human rights. Delaying the resolution of the issues the whistleblowers face will only contribute to the further decline of democracy and the principles of good governance.
“As staunch advocates for democracy, transparency, accountability, human rights, and the rule of law, we express our collective commitment to the ideals of this Convention and its vital role in countering corruption worldwide. Together we can urge States Parties to agree on concrete steps to protect people who report corruption from retaliation,” the open letter states.
