How to sit in a chair, what to do when being interrupted in the middle of a sentence, should you give off the record comments during the small talk with a host, these are just a few skills BCSP researchers learned at the training for TV appearances.
BCSP researchers had mastered TV appearance through a lecture and simulations of an interview and a talk show. The training took place on August 14 and it was held by Vera Vukovic, journalist at Radio-television of Serbia (RTS).
During the first part of training, BSPC researchers took part in an interview simulation. Security sector corruption risks were the topic of interview with researcher Katarina Djokic, and internship program was in focus of conversation with researcher Aurelija Djan. Are citizens of Serbia safe and do they feel safer than citizens of other states in the region, were some of the questions for researchers Isidora Stakic and Bojan Elek. RTS journalist talked about private security in Serbia with researcher Marko Milosevic, while gender equality in security sector was topic of the interview with researcher Maja Bjelos. During the simulations, RTS journalist initiated all common as well as unexpected situations endangering appearance quality. Together with the journalist, BSPC researchers looked through and analyzed their interviews, and afterwards were given theoretical and practical advices, correcting most of mistakes they made.
„It is necessary for researchers, like everyone else who aims to influence the public, to realize importance of communications and especially how it should be carried out on TV. Although live appearance is a very demanding task, it is easier to weather having constantly on mind the ultimate goal – sharing research results to as many people as possible. Through simulation of situations that happen during a show we worked on basics of TV appearance preparation, and improvement of presentation skills of BSPC researchers, which is key for achieving effective TV appearance”, said Vukovic, journalist working on the “Upitnik” show.
Researchers were given a presentation and advices how to behave during TV appearance, what kind of relation to have with a host and other participants, as well as how to react to unpleasant questions. At the end, BSPC researchers participated in TV show simulation and implemented given advices. First group was talking about security perception of Serbian citizens, while topic of the second show was Belgrade-Pristine relations. Together with the journalist, they analyzed strong and weak sides of each participant in simulated talk shows, and shared views on the training achievements.
