How to fight against police corruption in the Western Balkans

Corruption risk assessment methodology, as well as the mechanisms and instruments for addressing those risks were at the very focus of the regional seminar that gathered 10 think-tank organizations from the Western Balkans. The seminar was aimed at raising research capacities of the participating organizations in dealing with police corruption, and has also served for exchanging participants’ knowledge on this subject. 

The BCSP was represented at the seminar by the executive director Predrag Petrovic and researcher Sasa Djordjevic, who shared their expertise on researching corruption gained during implementation of the project Corruption Risks Map in Security Sector of Serbia. Petrovic has introduced to participants main risks dominating Serbian police while Djordjevic has presented how to research corruption in border police of Serbia. 

Much of the seminar was occupied by the Center for the Study of Democracy, whose researchers have shared their extensive experience and skills in addressing the issue of corruption and organized crime. Representative of the Romanian Ministry of Interior (RMoI) has acquainted participants with the methodology for identification and prevention of the corruption risks which is being applied by RMoI.

Regional seminar on researching police corruption was held in Sofia from 13 – 14 June, 2013, and was jointly organized by the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces and Center for the Study of Democracy from Sofia.
