The best of BCSP in 2012
In the year of 2012 BCSP celebrated its 15th anniversary and continued with the development of innovative research, educational materials and programmes, as well as the new communication and advocacy tools and tactics.
Improvement of security of citizens and society was in the midst of all activities BCSP team members organised in 2012.
BCBP continued to produce and develop wide range of analysis, publications, and research, networking, advocacy and education outputs in line with its three thematic programs.
NATIONAL SECURITY
With new edition of the and the unique database called we presented in a comprehensive and transparent manner the key findings of multi-year research conducted with original methodology BCSP developed for monitoring the security sector reform in Serbia.
Some of our recommendations for the improvement of of security forces have been adopted by the European Commission in its Progress Report for Serbia. Within accountability agenda, we have started the research on corruption in the security sector, and in 2012 BCSP launched the first interactive portal on this issue called .
BCSP also put in public focus topic of in the security sector. Along with the research on the role of women in police and army, we produced an on the implementation of the National Action Plan for the Resolution 1325 – Women, Peace and Security, and initiated the first meeting of the women's peace organisations and relevant state institutions. This year, we also published on the topics of gender equality and local security.
Even more than in previous years, BCSP conducted specialised workshops for the representatives of and , and educated journalists and on security priorities. We continued to implement our popular internship program, which so far nurtured of domestic and foreign students interested in security.
Due to the effectiveness of our trainings on democratic and civilian control of the armed forces, BCSP is one of the few organisations worldwide elected as a on how to communicate complex ideas.
BALKANS SECURITY
BCSP contributed to the improvement of civilian and democratic control of the security sector throughout the Western Balkans by exporting the methodology for evaluation of the reform, and leading the that resulted in the publication of the in 2012.
We continued with the research of the security challenges caused by the conflicts during the 1990s, such as unresolved territorial and boundary , relations between Serbian and Albanian , and opportunities for trust building. Through the Belgrade-Pristina-Tirana we initiated a dialogue about the sources of security challenges in the region, and in the future we will continue to work on the formulation of possible solutions to the problems.
One of the novelties is that the academic journal , which BCSP publishes in cooperation with the Faculty of Political Sciences, will continue to be published only in English language, with the title .
EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
BCSP public opinion pool „“ has shown the growth of Euro-scepticism in Serbia, especially among young people. The findings presented by the BCSP research team triggered an intense public debate about the European future of Serbia. The results of the research were cited by all the leading national media, but also many regional, and even by certain journalists in Washington, DC.
In 2012, BCSP continued to lead the network of organisations that are interested to submit their comments in the field of to the state authorities, and give their opinion on the priorities for funding from IPA and other sources of development assistance.
BCSP co-organised the second , the major event in Serbia for the dialogue on international policy, and analysis of our researchers were published by the .
Serbian foreign policy and security challenges related to migration management were topics BCSP members discussed in , with the representatives of the European Commission.
BCSP shared fifteen-year experience in with the Egyptian civil society organisations during the , and by mentoring the Egyptian partner organisation in order to help create the solutions in their particular context.
