Press Release:

Urgent Prosecution Response Required on Alleged Plot to Assassinate Student Pavle Cicvarić

The Civil Committee for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Whistleblowers calls on the competent Public Prosecutor’s Office to immediately act upon information about an alleged plot to assassinate student Pavle Cicvarić, as publicly stated on Informer television by Siniša Vučinić, a member of the Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party.

The Prosecutor’s Office has a duty to question Vučinić regarding the information he disclosed. Failing to do so would risk direct responsibility for any consequences that may follow, including a potential attack on Cicvarić’s life.
During the broadcast on Informer, Vučinić presented a prepared note claiming to possess reliable knowledge of plans to kill Pavle Cicvarić, allegedly with the aim of reigniting mass protests. We stress that questioning Vučinić is also in his own interest, as under Article 331 of the Serbian Criminal Code, failure to report preparations for a criminal act constitutes a criminal offense punishable by up to one year in prison.
The Civil Committee reminds that the Public Prosecutor’s Office is a state authority mandated to prosecute perpetrators of criminal and other punishable acts and to safeguard the public interest. In times of heightened social tensions, the Prosecutor’s Office cannot remain a passive observer. It has a duty to protect every citizen from threats, especially when those threats concern their very lives.
