AUKUS, China, and the New Global Order

The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy invites you to a lecture and discussion titled AUKUS, China, and the New Global Order which will be organized on Thursday, June 16 at 4pm. The lecture will be held by Srđan Vučetić, a professor at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa, Canada.

AUKUS — a “surprise” security pact Australia, the UK, and the US signed in 2021 – is already changing the shape of a geopolitical space now called “the Indo-Pacific.” Although not a NATO-styled collective security agreement, AUKUS nevertheless builds on a complex and long-standing infrastructure that binds these three “Anglosphere” states across virtually all security areas. Combining sociological and historical analysis with the best available information from the public domain, this presentation situates AUKUS in the evolution of regional and global orders, with special reference to rising Chinese power.

The lecture on this topic will be held by Srđan Vučetić, a professor at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa, Canada. He is the author of The Anglosphere: A Genealogy (Stanford 2011), Greatness and Decline: National Identity and British Foreign Policy (McGill-Queen’s, 2021) and over thirty scholarly articles in International Affairs, International Journal, International Organization, International Politics and some other international journals. His most recent article, on China’s rise and Asian international order, can be found in the latest issue of Journal of Regional Security.

The follow-up discussion will be moderated by Srđan Hercigonja, senior researcher at the  Belgrade Centre for Security Policy.
