BCSP Presents the Research on Russian Community in Serbia

On 20 February 2025. at Envoy Conference, Belgrade Centre for Security Policy will present the latest research “Non-Malign Influence - What Does the Russian Community in Serbia Think and Do”.

Since February 2022, Serbia has experienced a significant influx of Russian nationals settling in the country. This growing presence of the Russian community has prompted numerous questions regarding their adaptation to life in Serbia and their willingness to integrate into Serbian society. The context of this migration, particularly the mass departure from Russia following the onset of the war in Ukraine, raises critical questions about the motivations behind their decision to leave Russia and the reasons of choosing Serbia over other potential destinations.

In addition to these issues, our research focuses on the political views of these individuals, their interest in participating in civic and political activities and their plans for the future. To what extent can Russians who have relocated to Serbia contribute to democratic reforms in their home country? Do they plan to return to Russia if the war in Ukraine ends? By addressing these questions, our research results seek to provide a comprehensive understanding of the experiences, challenges, and aspirations of the Russian nationals now residing in Serbia, offering valuable insights into their integration processes, political attitudes and interest in the political and civic engagement.

Srđan Cvijić and Kristina Nikolić will present the report. A discussion will follow the presentation, featuring Maxim Samorukov (Fellow, Carnegie Russia Eurasia Centre), Srđan Cvijić (President of the International Advisory Committee, BCSP), and Margarita Zavadskaya (Senior Research Fellow, Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA), participating online. The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Radina Vučetić (Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade).
