Press Release:
To investigate all information about the connection of senior officials in the Ministry of Interior with human smugglers
In connection to yesterday’s announcement in which it was declared that six migrants were arrested (among them two people suspected of having committed criminal acts) in an operation aimed at suppressing criminal activity and felonies committed by migrants and in connection to a statement given by the minister Vulin that not one smuggling gang will pass, Belgrade Centre for Security Policy and the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights – YUCOM, demand that the Prosecutor’s office for organized crime, during the processing of human smuggling perpetrators, seriously investigate all the information about the connection between senior officials in the Ministry of Interior and the smugglers.
Information provided by BIRN in a research article published on June 22, but also the scale of the escalation of violence among migrants and smugglers, just two days after the publication of the article, indicate that the Ministry of Interior bears a large part of the responsibility for endangering the safety of citizens.
During Minister Vulin’s mandate, crime escalated in these areas, while his frequent statements containing hate speech are causing intolerance and hate towards all those who are different in Serbia, including national minorities and migrants. The years-long passive attitude of the Ministry of Interior damaged the official Serbian policy on managing migration which implies acceptance and support. Spending the last years in positions in security structures, firstly as a minister of defense, then as a minister of interior, Aleksandar Vulin violated the integrity of the security sector with his statements and threatened the official policy of the Serbian government regarding European integration.

Civil society organisations express deep concern over the direction of the investigative actions concerning the incident of 15 March 2025, which have recently been undertaken by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade. The current conduct of this Prosecutor’s Office is the exact opposite of the thorough and impartial investigation that such a grave case requires. Instead, it indicates a deliberate intention to cover up the actual incident and divert public attention towards the political persecution of victims and all those who have provided them with legal or other forms of support.
