Training for journalists – gender equality in security sector
The differences in security needs of men and women,the obstacles women are faced with when it comes to employment and advancement in the security sector, various types of discrimination against women in security institutions and the ways of reporting abot this topic-these are the themes of training for journalists organized by BCSP.
Belgrade centre for security policy (BCSP) is organising training for journalists about specifics of research of the security sector, with focus on challenges faced by women employed in the security institutions.The training will be held from February 28 to March 1.
The representatives of the print and electronic media with local, national and regional coverage interested in participating in the training, can send their applications until February 25 to mail address radomir.cvetkovic@bezbednost.org
The application should contain:
a) short biography;
b) security and/or gender equality topics previously covered;
c) telephone number.
What will training participants gain?
Through training journalists will:
– Participate in lectures;
– Go on a study visit to the security institutions;
– Talk directly with women employed in the security sector;
– Learn additional skills in media coverage;
– Create media report on gender equality in the security sector (the costs of production will be covered by the training organiser).
BCSP especially encourage media representatives from the provinces to apply. The costs of travel and accommodation for participants who are not from Belgrade will be covered by the organiser. Journalists with the experience in reporting on security sector or gender equality will have advantage.

The enrollment of women in the performance of public affairs in the security sector is an indicator of the level of democratization of society and the state. It shows us who has the power in the security sector and is security available for all citizens,regardless of their gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation. Women’s active participation in the security institutions such as police and army, can change traditional understanding of security as a “sector reserved only for men” which implies the use of force.
Our wish is that, through this training, we promote journalistic practice in this area, and offer usefull knowledge to journalists and others involved in reporting or making a decision on the manner in which information is transmitted.
