Brussels monitoring asylum and readmission in Serbia
At the Directorate for the Enlargement of the European Commission, a team of researchers from the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) presented the initial findings of the "Towards Europeanization: Monitoring established policies and practices in areas related to the asylum and readmission in the Serbian Republic" report.
In addition, representatives of Group 484, Miroslava Jelačić and Danilo Rakić, Novi Sad Humanitarian Center, Dijana Malbaša, and BCSP, Marko Savković conducted several interviews with representatives of institutions in Brussels. Together they attempted to identify the problems and deficiencies in Serbia’s readmission and asylum system.
The European Commission stressed that the key is to find a place for migration policy in the annual Progress Report of the Serbian Republic, and that the EU will continue the monitoring efforts undertaken by the Serbian government. But the ECRE had the most to say about helping organizations in the region implement effective and independent oversight of policies regarding migration management.
BCSP, together with the Group 484 and Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, continues to work on networking and training of civilian society actors interested in actively and effectively advocating for solutions to Serbian migration policies. This is highlighted by organization of the seminar in Subotica.
