Local Safety in Serbia: Challenges and Possibilities

This roundtable discussion aims to define: 1) the problems that the local safety councils in Serbia are facing; 2) why it is important to establish these bodies and 3) ways for increasing the level of local safety.

How to increase the level of local safety, why local safety councils are important and how to improve the cooperation among the police and local authorities in towns and municipalities in Serbia – these are the main topics of the roundtable Belgrade Centre for Security Policy is organising on Thursday, 18 December, 10:00am in Media Center.

Twelve years had passed, since the first local safety councils in Serbia have been established. During this period there was no political support to their work. This roundtable therefore aims to define: 1) the problems that the local safety councils in Serbia are facing; 2) why it is important to establish these bodies and 3) ways for increasing the level of local safety.

  • Sasa Djordjevic, Researcher, BCSP;
  • Representative of the Ministry of Interior (TBC);
  • Hajrudin Hajrovic, President of the Safety Council of Novi Pazar;
  • Dalibor Mitic, Assistant to the President of the Municipality of Paracin;
  • Gorana Radovanovic, Researcher, BCSP.

Discussion topics:

  • In what ways can local safety councils increase the level of local safety in towns and municipalities in Serbia;
  • What are the main achievements and what problems does the Safety Council of Novi Pazar face;
  • Why Paracin decided to establish the Safety Council and what are the future plans for its’ work;
  • What challenges are local safety councils facing;
  • Why gender is important element of local safety.

Roundtable will be held in Serbian language. Translation into English is provided.
