Panel discussions on corruption in the police

Civil society organizations gathered in the A-COP group will organize six public meetings throughout Serbia during April in order to start a dialogue on the consequences of police corruption and ways of combating this multiple harmful problem.

Police corruption is very present and that undermineds the integrity of the police and its officials.

This conclusion is a result of a survey on the attitudes of citizens and police officers on corruption, assessments of the police work, statistics on criminal charges against the police officers. Media in Serbia had reported on various scandals regarding the work of the Ministry of Interior during the 2013 and members of the A-COP group have presented case studies on corruption in police in Serbia.

All this facts shows that in Serbia does not properly function harmonized system of internal control of the police. That system should, together with the institutions of external oversight and control, ensure that the police do not act outside the rules and at the same time increase the responsibility of the police officers. The implementation of strategic documents for reducing corruption in the police is also questionable.

In order to hear opinion of citizens of Serbia on distribution of corruption, consequences which leaves and ways of fighting against it, during April, it will be organized 6 panel discussion in the following order:

  • Brus 14 April at 13:00
  • Prokuplje, 14 April at 18:00
  • Niš, 15 April at 12:00
  • Majdanpek 28 April at 13:00
  • Zrenjanin, 30 April at 12:00
  • Becej 30 April starting at 16:00

The organizers of the panel discussion are: Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP), Novi Sad School of Journalism, Toplica Center for Democracy and Human Rights, Info Center Brus, South News, Protecta, Bečej Youth Union and the Society against corruption.
