Young women in Vranje see their own security different than young man
Mapping insecurity sources for young women and men in Vranje, also analysing locations in the city that are considered insecure were main activities conducted by BCSP researchers during November of 2015.

The main goal of Belgrade Centre for Security Policy activities conducted on 9th and 10th November 2015 was to provide detailed analysis of different security threats in order to create methodology that will help local actors in charge for security and youth politics to get a better insight on security problems that young people are facing in local communities.
Regarding this goal, two focus groups were conducted to discuss factor of insecurity for youth and about ways of solving those problems. Focus groups are conducted separately with young women and men, in order to get an insight from different gender perspectives.
Different security problems for young women and men
Based on the results gathered through focus groups, it's obvious that young women see differently security threats than young men. For example, young men said that they generally feel safe in Vranje, but young women said that there are many situations and factors that are making them feel very insecure.
The biggest security threat for men is private security working in bars. One of the participants said that “in Vranje private security often beat young men without any reason, but also young men fight among themselves, and security is not responding to that”.
On the other side, young women said that “they have problem whenever men get little drunk, they (men) become violent, start to call out, pull them for their jackets and arms, no matter where they are”. Data collected via focus group discussion also showed that women don’t feel safe when they are walking alone during the night, primarily because of lack of public lighting.
When it comes to marginalised groups of youth, like Roma, there are different focus groups participants’ opinions. If we take under consideration that young Roma are more integrated in local community compared to the past period, there is still discrimination that can be threat to this minority group security.
Improve public lighting and security of public spaces in Vranje

Young men think that there aren’t specific locations in Vranje that contribute their personal sense of insecurity. On the other hand, young women named five locations in Vranje that are especially unsafe. In order to interrogate security aspect of public spaces in Vranje “security walk” was conducted, based on which you can analyze specific location isolation, lighting, and also personal sense of security. Based on personal impression and observation, participants of the security walk named as main recommendation for security situation improvement: Better lighting, securing public areas, and also more frequent police patrols.
