BCSP Panel Discussion on Civil Society & Digital Oversight

On 31 October at the Envoy Hotel, the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) will host a panel discussion titled “Freedoms Under Pressure: Civil Society and Digital Oversight in Serbia and Abroad”.

The panel discussion will bring together experts, journalists and activists who will shed light on the growing problem of spyware abuse in Serbia. The participants will discuss how surveillance software is used to monitor journalists, activists and human rights defenders, the consequences such practices have for freedom of expression and privacy, and the institutional mechanisms needed to prevent digital repression.

The event will also mark the launch of the Civil Society Digital Security Network (CSDSN), an international network led by the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, designed to enhance the capacities of civil society in the Balkans and several EU member states to protect against spyware and other malicious software attacks.

Speakers include:

  • Nikola Ristić, activist and spyware victim

  • Márta Pardavi, Co-Chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee

  • Ruairi Nolan, Deputy Programme Director and Head of the Disrupting Surveillance Team at Amnesty International

  • Aleksa Tešić, journalist with BIRN

  • Predrag Petrović, Research Director at BCSP

By opening space for dialogue on transparency, oversight, and accountability, this event seeks to raise public awareness about the risks posed by digital surveillance technologies and the importance of safeguarding freedoms under pressure.
