The Perseverance of Terrorism: Focus on Leaders – Advanced Research Workshop

This workshop’s theme falls into the NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme key priority of facilitating mutually beneficial cooperation on issues of common interest, including international efforts to meet emerging security challenges such as counter-terrorism.

The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy is in partnership with the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) administering NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme (SPS) Advanced Research Workshop “The Perseverance of Terrorism: Focus on Leaders”, which will be held 24-26 April 2013 in Belgrade.

This event will gether around 40 experts from all over the Europe.

The objectives of the ARW are as follows:

– to assess the longevity and perseverance of the terrorist threat to both NATO members and NATO partner countries;

– to establish the extent to which the terrorist threat is dependent on the issue of leadership in terrorist groups, organisations and networks;

– to disseminate knowledge and exchange information about the recent state of scholarship and expertise related to countering terrorism;

– to establish long-lasting links and networks amongst the workshop’s participants, to strengthen the links between academia and the think tank community, and provide the participants with a platform of contact with the world’s most established terrorism experts;

– to critically assess existing knowledge related to countering terrorism and identify gaps;

– to identify challenges to policy-oriented research on leadership of terrorist groups, organisations and networks in the post-bin Laden age;

– to offer a structured set of solutions to counter-terrorism practitioners on how to approach the issue of leadership in terrorist groups, organisations and networks, and how to address this issue in the most efficient manner.

BCSP Researcher Marko Milosevic and PISM analyst in the international security programme Kacper Rekawek are co-directors of the ARW.
