US Foreign Policy – A New Chapter

The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy and the Faculty of Political Sciences University of Belgrade invite you to an online discussion about the US foreign policy, focusing on its policy towards the Balkans. The event will be organized on March 29 at 3 pm (CET).

Many analysts, politicians, and theorists of international relations believe that the election of the 46th President of the United States, Joseph Biden, represents a return of American foreign policy to the old track. Predictability, global leadership, multilateralism, strong cooperation with traditional allies, and, above all, the foundation of politics on the values that were endangered during the previous administration should give the “new normalcy” a positive connotation. The first moves of the new American President on the international scene confirm the positive changes. Reintegration into the Paris climate agreement, a hint of a return to the Iranian nuclear agreement, and calls for the restoration of the damaged trust between the USA and the EU are important messages of the first months of the mandate. As for the relations with Serbia, it seems that there is still not enough information to be able to assess what it will be like. That is why it is interesting to ask questions right now.

How much will the US rely on the EU in its foreign policy towards the Balkans? How will democracy issues be at the heart of that policy? What will be the policy towards the relations between Serbia and Kosovo? How will the United States respond to the growing influence of third powers in the region?

The answers to these and many other questions will be provided by:

  • Cameron Munter, former Ambassador to Serbia (2007 – 2009)
  • Edward P. Joseph, lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, SAIS, Foreign Policy Institute
  • Igor Bandovic, Director of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy

Moderator & discussant: Dr. Milan Krstic, Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade

The welcome speech will be given by Dr. Dragan Simic, Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade

The working language of the discussion is English.
