Promoting police integrity in the Western Balkans

POINTPULSE network would like to contribute towards creating consensus in the region on the realisation of the most important measures for the future development of police, with the view to achieving the ultimate goal - police officers with integrity and better security for the citizens.

The regional network of civil society organisations POINTPULSE is organising conference on Thursday, 10 December 2015 at 9 AM, in Hotel Zira (Ruzveltova st. 35, Belgrade).

The main topics of this event will be the importance of police reform in the Western Balkans and its influence on the European integrations and regional cooperation, the role of internal control in strengthening police integrity and the implementation of community policing.

Through a dialogue with the main actors of police reform in the region, the conference aims to determine opportunities for strengthening internal control of police and developing the community policing concept. 

The conference will be officially opened with a panel consisting of the Director of Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, Ms. Sonja Stojanovic Gajic;representative of the Ministry of Interior of Serbia; the Head of OSCE Mission to Serbia, H.E. Mr. Peter Burkhard; and Head of Operations Section I at the EU Delegation to Serbia, Mr. Nicolas Bizel.

Police professionals from the region, European experts on police reform and a representative of the Regional Anti-Corruption Initiative will participate in the event.

During the conference following issues will be discussed:

  1. Why is the police reform important from the perspective of the EU accession process?
  2. What are the main challenges for the police reform in the region?
  3. What needs to be done so that citizens have access to accountable police and improved safety?
  4. What are the ways for internal control of police to strengthen police integrity?
  5. Can the community policing concept contribute to speeding up the police reform in the region?

Working languages for the conference are Serbian and English. Simultaneous translation will be provided.

The conference is a joint initiative of the regional network of civil society organisations POINTPULSE and the OSCE Mission to Serbia.
