The first Belgrade Security Forum is officially closed
Three civil society organizations, Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence (www.bfpe.org), European Movement in Serbia (www.emins.org) and the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (www.ccmr-bg.org), organized the Security Forum in order to place Belgrade and the region on the map of world security forums, where strategic topics are discussed.
Which global developments influence the security of citizens of the Balkans? What lessons can the Balkan countries offer to other regions? Are EU policies relevant outside of Europe or is Europe losing the race with new economic powers such as Brazil, China, India and Turkey? These are only few of the questions which were discussed by over 300 domestic and foreign senior officials from European countries, representatives of the European Union, NATO, scientific and research institutes, civil society, parliamentarians and journalists at the first Belgrade Security Forum which was held at the Central Military Club from September 14 to 16, 2011.
Following the example of similar conventions in Brussels, Munich or Bratislava, and in an open and critical atmosphere, the three-day Belgrade forum, with over 70 foreign guests, discussed topics such as: energy security; the new role of Turkey, NATO and Russia in Europe; consequences of regime changes in the Middle East on our security; recipes for successful regional security cooperation; and experiences of women as the heads of ministries of defence or international organizations.
The opening of the Forum was preceded by a meeting of 20 young scientists from the region. They presented their research findings on the relations in the region and the place of the Western Balkans in Europe. Their papers will be published in special edition of Western Balkan’s Security magazine, which is being published by Belgrade Centre for Security Policy.
