What we fear, who protects us? – Public Opinion Polls Pesentation; Media Center at 12AM

Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) will present on October 30th at 12h in Media Centre the second part of its public opinion polls "Citizens of Serbia on Security".

At the conference in Media Centre BCSP representatives will analyze the latest data on Serbian citizens perception of:

1. Security threats and sense of (in)security;

2. Role of the state in preserving security;

3. Performance of the previous government in security sector;

4. Expectations from the new government in the process of reform of police, army and security services.

The analysis will cover all relevant aspects of the work of security institutions, first of all, the army and police. The special emphasis will be on the treatment of certain social groups by the police, a possible improvement of police work, and attitude to the reforms carried out in the Serbian Army.

Data was collected by survey of attitudes of 1200 respondents. The aim of the research was to determine citizens perception of their own security and the importance of the work of government in the perception of security.

The project is a continuation and deepening of the last years opinion poll, which was published in specialized academic journal.

By the end of the year, we will also present the results of data collected through interviews with focus groups – eight focus groups in six cities, and by in-depth interviews with up to 30 interviewees.

The primary objective of the third part of the project is to determine the potential for violence in the Serbian society, the degree of popular support for the activities of extremist groups, and the willingness of citizens to be directly involved in political violence. In that sense, the research will particularly focus on the role of dissatisfaction with socio-economic and political situation, as independent variables affecting the orientation towards violence.
