Perceptions of Albania in Serbian media are mostly negative and related to Kosovo issue
Representatives of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) participated in the conference "Serbia and Albania: Do Perceptions Equal Reality?" which took place in Tirana, on May 23 and 24, and which was organised as part of the project that BCSP implements in partnership with the Albanian Institute for International Studies (AIIS).
{image1}Member of the BCSP Executive Board Filip Ejdus, researcher Isidora Stakic, and associate Nikola Vujinovic participated in the Tirana conference on the topic of Serbian and Albanian perceptions of the other country.
During the first day, there were two roundtables with students of the European University of Tirana and University “Marin Barleti” on the topic of Serbian-Albanian relations. Students from both universities showed great interest in the results of the research conducted as a part of this project. Participants discussed main findings of the research and shared their experiences and impressions about Serbia and the relations between Serbia and Albania.
The main event was held on the second day and it was attended by the representatives of Albanian civil society, experts, academics and journalists. Filip Ejdus presented the findings of the research on perceptions of Albania in the Serbian media.
{image2}One of the main conclusions of the conference was that Serbia and Albania should focus on cooperation in the so-called “safe areas”, i.e. economy and culture, which would result in the improvement of political relations between the two countries. Participants of the conference also agreed that the main cause of negative perceptions is a lack of knowledge of the other country.
After the conference, BCSP representatives visited the Serbian Embassy, at the invitation of the Serbian ambassador in Albania.
The findings of the research conducted by BCSP and AIIS will soon be published and presented to an international audience on the third , to be held from 19 to 21 September 2013. This international conference BCSP organises in partnership with the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence and the European Movement in Serbia.
