The Citizens of Serbia Between EU, Russia and NATO – Public Opinion Polls Pesentation
Belgrade Centre for Security Policy will present the first part of its public opinion poll findings concerning Serbia's security integrations on October 17th, at 11 am, in the Media Centre.
What citizens of Serbia think about joining the EU, what about joining NATO, and how they look at the strengthening of military cooperation with Russia – these are information that will be presented and discussed about at the media conference.
Citizens have also asserted which states they perceive as the greatest friends of Serbia, and which as the greatest enemies; they have evaluated the performance of the previous government in the areas of police, army and security services, and they have declared their expectations of the new government in the reforms of these institutions.
Data was collected by survey of attitudes of 1200 respondents. The aim of the research was to determine trends in the attitudes of citizens towards the security sector, security integrations, as well as their perception of their own security and the importance of national identity in the perception of security.
The project is a continuation and deepening of the last opinion poll, which was published in specialized academic journal.
By the end of the year, there will also be presented the results of data collected through interviews with focus groups – eight focus groups in six cities, and by in-depth interviews with up to 30 interviewees in six cities.
The primary objective of the second part of the project is to determine the potential for violence in the Serbian society, the degree of popular support for the activities of extremist groups, and the willingness of citizens to be directly involved in political violence. In that sense, the study will particularly focus on the role of dissatisfaction with socio-economic and political situation, as independent variables affecting the orientation towards violence.
