EU integration process and the perspective of Albanian – Serbian Relations
The aim of the 7th Security Research Forum is to discuss Serbian-Albanian relations in lights of their common EU agenda, but also in lights of the recent incident on the football match Serbia-Albania that sparked inter-ethnic tensions. The focus will be on the role of political and societal elites and the ways for Serbs and Albanians to improve their mutual relations.
Security Research Forum ‘Belgrade-Prishtina-Tirana’ will be held in Tirana on 13 November 2014, with the title ‘EU integration process and the perspective of Albanian – Serbian Relations’. The conference will be opened by H.E. Mr. Jan Braathu, Ambassador of Norway in Tirana.
Key questions that the first panel will address are: What has been the impact of Juncker’s “no more enlargements for next 5 years” statement? Is there a risk that political elites of Western Balkan countries loosen their commitment to meet the EU accession criteria? Is public support for the EU decreasing? What are the chances of a low-profile EU in the region being replaced by other global players? How are Serbs, Albanians and their relations affected? The speakers on the first panel will be:
- Prof. Paskal Milo, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs
- Dusan Janjic, Policy Analyst
- Shkelzen Maliqi, Policy Analyst
The second panel will be focused on the causes and consequences of the incident that happened on the football match between Serbia and Albania. The panel will seek to answer the questions: whether this failure can be turned into an opportunity for examining and addressing the existing gaps in cooperation between Belgrade, Prishtina and Tirana, and how can institutions respond better to the demands for improved security cooperation. The participants in the discussion will be:
- Pandeli Majko, Member of Parliament (TBC)
- Shpend Kursani, Senior Researcher, Kosovar Centre for Security Studies
- Sonja Stojanovic Gajic, Director of Belgrade Centre for Security Policy
- Arjan Dyrmishi, Head of Center for European and Security Affairs (IDM)
